Let’s Talk Therapy: The Good, the Awkward, and the Life-Changing
Trauma has a way of tuning you into frequencies most people don’t hear. I often say trauma is like a dog whistle—only the traumatized can hear its piercing call. For me, it heightened my sensitivities, making me double over in emotional pain while others looked on, confused. Therapy didn’t just change my life; it saved my life. But let’s not sugarcoat this journey—therapy isn’t all cozy blankets and “aha” moments. It’s also awkward, messy, and, at times, downright uncomfortable. And that’s exactly why it works.
The Uncomfortable Truths About Therapy
Let’s be real: therapy can feel awkward as hell. Think about it—you’re booking an appointment to spill your deepest thoughts and messiest feelings to a total stranger. And don’t get me started on trust issues. If you’ve got some (raises hand), therapy might feel like trying to hug a cactus. Awkward? Yes. But worth it? Absolutely.
I’ll say this: therapy isn’t about perfection or comfort. It’s about growth. And just like eating your vegetables or hitting the gym, it may not be fun at first, but it’ll make you stronger in the long run.
First-Timer Fears
For first-timers, therapy can feel terrifying. Most of my clients show up carrying a mix of these fears:
Fear of the unknown.
Fear of being judged.
Fear of the unknown (yes, it’s that big).
People often think therapy means digging up every painful memory from birth to now. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. A good therapist isn’t there to shove you into the deep end before you’re ready. They’ll meet you where you are, moving at your pace. And if things feel too intense, you can speak up. Trust me—setting boundaries in therapy is encouraged, not frowned upon.
Is Therapy for You?
You don’t have to wait for a full-on crisis to consider therapy. But if life feels like it’s squeezing the joy out of you or your struggles are bleeding into your relationships and daily life, it might be time to talk to someone. Mental health matters just as much as physical health, and let’s be honest—it’s hard to thrive when your mind and heart are heavy.
Finding the Right Therapist
Choosing a therapist can feel like dating—without the cute coffee shop meet-up. Here’s the most important rule: make sure they have a valid license. A license isn’t just a piece of paper; it’s proof that they’re educated, trained, and accountable to a governing body.
Titles like “life coach” or “spiritual advisor” may sound appealing, but when it comes to therapy, think of it this way: you wouldn’t let an unlicensed surgeon operate on you, so why trust an unlicensed therapist with your mental health?
That said, I understand and honor the value of cultural and spiritual healers, shamans, and pastors. They hold important spaces in many of our lives. But even if you consult with these guides, consider pairing it with therapy from a licensed professional. Think of it like consulting an herbalist for your overall wellness while still going to a doctor for surgery when needed.
Why Therapy Is Worth It
Therapy gave me tools I didn’t even know I needed. It taught me to unpack the fear and self-doubt that trauma had planted in my life. It helped me set boundaries, communicate better, and, most importantly, reconnect with the version of me I’d lost along the way.
But don’t get it twisted—therapy isn’t about “fixing” you. You’re not broken. Therapy is about giving you the space and support to heal, grow, and thrive on your terms.
